Summary
This document is intended as a general introduction to the role of patent documents as a source of technological information and discusses access to this source. Patent documents contain descriptions of scientific and technical concepts as well as practical details of processes and apparatus. Before the full technological value of patent documents can be appreciated, it is necessary to understand why patent documents are published and the role they play in the economic and technical development of a country. Patent documents possess both a legal and a technical significance that is not easy to differentiate. It is thus essential to understand the basic concepts of the patent system in order to fully discuss the technological impact patent documents make.
