Book review: An invaluable resource on protecting geographical indications in Africa

Marius Schneider and Nora Ho Tu Nam have recently published ‘Protecting Geographical Indications in Africa’ with Oxford University Press. The authors are partners in the intellectual property (IP) boutique firm IPvocate Africa. While based in Mauritius, they spread their wings throughout the African continent and have published numerous contributions in the field of IP. This excellent book is the first one they have dedicated to geographical indications (GIs) and is an important milestone in many respects. Books on the law of geographical indications are rare. Until 20 years ago, this subject was of little interest to IP experts and practitioners. Today, however, geographical indications are enjoying considerable recognition, driven largely by the European Union and by many other countries and institutions around the world who wish to promote their traditional know-how. From a legal standpoint, geographical indications are supported by very interesting case law, including from the Court of Justice of the European Union, and this specialty has become sought-after.
