Summary
Much of the focus of AI discussions in IP is on the negative. This article, originally presented at the 2025 CIPIL conference in Cambridge, takes a positive approach, proposing three assumptions about AI, and their likely impact on design law around the globe. First, AI will enable the generation of billions if not trillions of designs, requiring a rethink of what is protected, and how. Secondly, AI will dramatically improve image recognition technology with far-reaching impact across searching and classification. Thirdly, AI will play an increased role in decision making, reducing bias and costs, and increasing speed. The article concludes that there is much to be gained from AI.
