Note
“It's everywhere! You want ‘too big to fail’? Here it is!” Toxic, subprime mortgage-backed loans crippled the biggest banks in the United States in 2008 as home prices fell, throwing the American market into the Great Recession. Bailouts and bankruptcies plagued financial markets and affected even the biggest actors in the sector. On the heels of the Lehman Brothers' spectacular collapse, and as the financial world continued relentlessly melting in 2008 with the newest AIG headache, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, played by the late William Hurt in HBO's Too Big to Fail (2011), passionately highlights the double-edged sword of companies that are “too big to fail” in the introductory quote.
