Summary
The House of Birkenstock, established in Germany in 1774, has become a fashion icon, not least thanks to support from ageless influencers such as Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow. On its way to fame, Birkenstock has sought to enforce a variety of different intellectual property rights in court, but with only average, if not little, success. Claims under German copyright law, however, turned out to be quite promising—until January 2024 when the Cologne Appeal Court intervened.
