Summary
I. Introduction The book under review ‘Propriété intellectuelle et développement durable / Intellectual Property & Sustainable Development’ marks the 16th volume of the Propriété intellectuelle – Intellectual Property collection edited by Professor Jacques de Werra (University of Geneva). This compilation emerges from the discussions held during the ‘Journée de droit de la propriété intellectuelle’ that took place on 7 February 2023 at the University of Geneva. Through five chapters, intellectual property (IP) practitioners and academics explore different heated debates where sustainability intersects with IP. As highlighted by Professor de Werra in his avant-propos, ‘sustainability constitutes a significant societal concern, and one that will only grow in importance in the future’.1 Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have grown by 53% from 1990 to 2019, energy consumption being the biggest source (by far) of human-caused GHG,2 accounting for a significant 75.6% (37.6 GtCO2e) worldwide.3 Visible changes in the environment, such as extreme weather events,4 wildfires and rising sea levels5 stress the urgency to address climate change and environmental degradation.
