Summary
The past year has been very exciting for the patent programme at SAS Institute Inc. (SAS). We have seen a 300% increase in the number of allowances this year. While some of this increase is because of the growing number of filings from SAS and some of the increase is because of the change in regime at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), I believe that increase is also because of a change in process to interview each and every case in-person with the patent examiner. We began this process in April 2009 and have now reached a year of experience conducting in-person examiner interviews. Here, I am going to share the reasons for changing process, our experience at the patent office and some tips that we have picked up along the way.
