However, the concept of social innovation remains vague. This paper builds a conceptual framework from an economic perspective: The main criterion for identifying a social innovation concerns the way the benefits generated by an innovation are distributed between the (private or public) innovator and society. We close the paper by an extensive discussion of the conceptual boundaries, the research agenda and the policy implications we can derive based on the framework. 000048716 590__ $$aPublished online: 23-Mar-2020 000048716 650_0 $$aIntellectual property. 000048716 650_0 $$aTechnological innovations. 000048716 650_0 $$aSustainability. 000048716 650_0 $$aCopyright. 000048716 7001_ $$aCuntz, Alexander,$$eauthor. 000048716 7001_ $$aForay, Dominique,$$eauthor. 000048716 7001_ $$aMostovova, Elena,$$eauthor. 000048716 830_0 $$aInnovation: Organization & Management ;$$v2020, Vol.22 (4), p.469-487. 000048716 85640 $$uhttps://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14479338.2020.1735394$$yonline version 000048716 904__ $$aArticle 000048716 980__ $$aOS
