When a product’s design becomes more modular, a full mirroring response would change both its manufacturing and its supply chain. We evaluate this prediction for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), observing whether automakers have mirrored the modular BEV architecture in either internal production processes, external sourcing arrangements, or both. Our data from 19 automakers show that, to date, BEVs are manufactured in their assembly plants alongside conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). New automakers with fully BEV plants utilize essentially the same production process. Furthermore, automakers make—or ally to make—key Electric Vehicle (EV) systems, rather than outsourcing them. We discuss the implications of this partial mirroring for modularity theory and ask whether these arrangements will persist once BEV sales surpass ICEVs. 000048580 542__ $$fhttps://academic.oup.com/pages/using-the-content/citation 000048580 590__ $$aPublished online: 2023 000048580 650_0 $$aTechnological innovation. 000048580 650_0 $$aIntellectual property. 000048580 650_0 $$aDesign protection. 000048580 650_0 $$aAutomobile industry. 000048580 650_0 $$aCopyright. 000048580 7001_ $$aAlochet, Marc,$$eauthor. 000048580 7001_ $$aMacDuffie, John Paul,$$eauthor. 000048580 7001_ $$aMidler, Christophe,$$eauthor. 000048580 7731_ $$tIndustrial and Corporate Change,$$wINCC 000048580 830_0 $$aIndustrial and Corporate Change ;$$vVolume 32, Issue 1. 000048580 85641 $$uhttps://doi.org/10.1093/icc/dtac028 000048580 904__ $$aJournal article 000048580 980__ $$aINCC
