Our analysis of a set of Kickstarter projects suggests the existence of an apparent paradox concerning the role of patents in this funding context. Despite solid evidence in entrepreneurial finance literature on the positive role of patents for accessing financing from professional investors such as venture capitals and business angels, our results from the reward-based crowdfunding context point out a negative signaling role of patents. We provide explanations to reconcile such evidence with previous relevant literature and highlight promising avenues for future research in this area. 000047786 542__ $$fhttps://academic.oup.com/pages/using-the-content/citation 000047786 590__ $$aPublished online: 2019 000047786 650_0 $$aCrowd funding 000047786 650_0 $$aIntellectual property 000047786 650_0 $$aPatents 000047786 650_0 $$aEntrepreneurship 000047786 7001_ $$aMeoli, Azzurra,$$vauthor. 000047786 7001_ $$aMunari, Federico,$$eauthor. 000047786 7001_ $$aBort, James,$$eauthor. 000047786 7731_ $$tIndustrial and Corporate Change,$$wINCC 000047786 830_0 $$aIndustrial and Corporate Change$$vINCC 2019, 28(5), 1321-1341 000047786 85641 $$uhttps://doi.org/10.1093/icc/dtz004$$yRead the Article 000047786 904__ $$aJournal article 000047786 980__ $$aINCC
