Summary
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Uganda has implemented the Bilateral Project on Appropriate Technology for Uganda. For the project, the Government of Uganda was represented by the National Expert Group (NEG), chaired by the Registrar General of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), with members drawn from different Ministries, Agencies, Departments, Research Institutes and Universities. The NEG was assigned with the responsibility of steering the project implementation at the national level, whereas the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) was tasked with the role of the focal point to coordinate the project on behalf of Uganda. The purpose was to support Uganda in the identification, management, administration and utilization of technical and scientific information, with a focus on patent information, and in building national capacity on appropriate technology for development. In particular, the project focused on facilitating the use of patent information as a source of technology or technological solution for addressing the development needs at the community level. Identifying two appropriate technologies to be deployed at the beneficiary community was an important outcome of the project. The patent information search, which was conducted under this bilateral project, has provided an alternative technological solution to fired bricks as a way of preserving the environment. The preparation of the business plans for the identified technologies/technological solutions has been the final stage of the Bilateral Project on Appropriate Technology Uganda with WIPO, which concluded recently.
