N2  - This Manual of Patent Office Practice has been prepared by the Canadian Patent Office staff in consultation with members of the patent profession. It is intended as a guide to practice under the amended Patent Act and the amended Rules which came into force on October 1, 1996. The present manual will replace previous versions of the Manual of Patent Office Practice with respect to practices for applications filed on or after October 1, 1989. Certain practices which apply only to applications filed prior to October 1, 1989, such as conflict or the restrictions regarding applicable prior art, are not covered by this manual. An older version must therefore be consulted for guidance in those instances.
