Summary
In the era of digital music, the most recent and famous method of copying and sharing is Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks or software (For e.g. Napster). It was only after the introduction of Napster software, that online sharing of content by consumers became mainstream and continued to thrive over subsequent peer-to-peer (p2p) file sharing networks such as eMule and BitTorrent. However, such illegal file sharing activities have massive negative impact on the music industry. The widely accepted assumption or normal approach of Music Publishers is that ‘every music-file which is being downloaded illegally via file-sharing software is a definite loss to them’. In short, the illegal file sharing software has only negative effects. But this short research paper investigates and challenges this approach and further propounds that such illegal file sharing have some positive and neutral effects as well, while letting remain the fact of illegality of such file-sharing.
