The goal of this study is to explore how several demographic variables, along with self-reported behaviors and artistic activities associated with non-monetary and monetary motivators, predict income and income satisfaction for artists.Using unique survey data on current working artists in the United States, we provide empirical evidence on substantial reputational rewards and rewards from altruistic behaviors as important sources of artists' utility and, arguably, sources of their motivation to create new works. Moreover, we find that the evidence on "procedural" utility from working in the arts is less straightforward, and we find that many artists are pooling and diversifying financial risks on household levels. Overall, quantitative findings indicate that artists may have different criteria and conceptualizations when it comes to income, and they may derive value from their work in a variety of ways aside from income. 000029074 542__ $$fLicense: CC BY 3.0 IGO 000029074 650_0 $$aCopyright 000029074 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xCommerce$$xLaw and legislation. 000029074 7001_ $$aMiller, Angie L. 000029074 830_0 $$aEconomics Working Papers. 000029074 8564_ $$929c967c1-f684-4bdd-8db5-5c503e172c78$$s917760$$zComplete document (PDF)$$uhttps://tind.wipo.int/record/29074/files/wipo_pub_econstat_wp_50.pdf 000029074 901__ $$aWIPO/PUB/ECONSTAT/WP/50 000029074 902__ $$a4373_en 000029074 903__ $$aEconomics working papers 000029074 904__ $$aWorking paper 000029074 909CO $$ooai:tind.wipo.int:29074$$pWIPOPUB 000029074 980__ $$aWIPOPUB$$aERWP
