The accession of the European Union to the Madrid Protocol in 2004 linked the Madrid and the Community trade mark systems. The article sets out the procedural parameters before the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), the advantages of the new application strategies, which this link created, and the present use of them by trade mark applicants.
