Note
"The press have long resisted any form of statutory code controlling their treatment of individuals. With the introduction of the Data Protection Act 1998 on March 1, 2000, the present system of voluntary self-regulation is effectively given statutory effect, and individuals will receive significant new rights. Largely unheralded in this respect, the new Act arguably creates a right to privacy. Unlike the present libel controls, the new rights apply irrespective of whether a story is true or not. Journalists may be called upon to demonstrate to the Court that they reasonably believed publication of a particular story was in the public interest".
