With the  introduction of the Data Protection Act 1998 on March 1,  2000, the present system of voluntary self-regulation is  effectively given statutory effect, and individuals will  receive significant new rights. Largely unheralded in this  respect, the new Act arguably creates a right to privacy.  Unlike the present libel controls, the new rights apply  irrespective of whether a story is true or not.
