"In this paper the author examines the extent of format protection under U.K. law and in particular questions whether the courts' application of copyright law is correct. It suggests that the protection under U.K. law may be somewhat stronger than is assumed. This factor, together with the importance of "know-how" as part of a format's package, may be the reason why the television formats market remains robust in spite of the apparent weakness of legal protection."
