This report acknowledges that knowledge, not capital, is the key to sustained economic growth and improvements in human well-being. It distinguishes between two sorts of knowledge: knowledge about technology, called technical knowledge or simply know-how, and knowledge about attributes, that is, knowledge about products, processes, or institutions. The report focuses on the relationship between the unequal distribution in know-how (knowledge gaps) across and within countries and the difficulties posed by having incomplete knowledge of attributes (information problems). In the first of three parts, the report discusses the importance of knowledge to development, and the risks and opportunities that the information revolution poses for developing countries. It then examines three critical steps that developing countries must take to narrow knowledge gaps: acquiring knowledge, absorbing knowledge, and communicating knowledge. Part 2 discusses the nature and extent of information problems, specific information problems, and three areas where information problems are most severe, namely in financial information, in environmental research, and in listening to the poor. Part 3 summarizes what knowledge and information requirements mean for developing government and international institution policies."--Description from http://www-wds.worldbank.org. 000022762 61020 $$aWorld Bank. 000022762 650_0 $$aCommunication$$xEconomic aspects$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aInformation technology$$xEconomic aspects$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aInformation services$$xEconomic aspects$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aKnowledge, Theory of$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aMacroeconomics and Economic Growth. 000022762 650_0 $$aEconomic indicators$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aInfrastructure (Economics)$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aInternational economic relations$$vPeriodicals. 000022762 650_0 $$aKnowledge economy. 000022762 650_0 $$aCompetition, International$$vPeriodicals. 000022762 650_0 $$aEconomic development$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aKnowledge, Sociology of$$zDeveloping countries. 000022762 650_0 $$aEconomic development. 000022762 650_0 $$aKnowledge, Sociology of. 000022762 650_0 $$aKnowledge, Theory of. 000022762 650_0 $$aEconomic indicators. 000022762 650_0 $$aKnowledge management$$xIntangible property$$xValuation. 000022762 650_0 $$aInformation society. 000022762 650_0 $$aAgriculture. 000022762 650_0 $$aICT Policy and Strategies. 000022762 650_0 $$aEducation. 000022762 650_0 $$aDeveloping countries$$xEconomic conditions. 000022762 650_0 $$aWelfare economics. 000022762 650_0 $$aInternational economic relations. 000022762 650_0 $$aCompetition, International. 000022762 650_0 $$aAgricultural Knowledge and Information Systems. 000022762 650_0 $$aEducation for the Knowledge Economy. 000022762 650_0 $$aInformation and Communication Technologies. 000022762 650_0 $$aRural development. 000022762 650_0 $$aRural Development Knowledge and Information Systems. 000022762 650_0 $$aEconomic history$$y1990-. 000022762 650_0 $$aInformation technology. 000022762 650_4 $$aKNOWLEDGE : WORLD DEVELOPMENT 000022762 650_4 $$aLAW AND ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SCIENCES : ECONOMIC SCIENCE : QUESTIONS REGARDING DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND THE TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY 000022762 650_6 $$aSociété informatisée. 000022762 650_6 $$aConcurrence internationale. 000022762 650_6 $$aGestion des connaissances$$xÉvaluation. 000022762 651_0 $$aDeveloping countries$$xEconomic conditions$$vStatistics. 000022762 651_0 $$aDeveloping countries$$xCommerce$$xLaw and legislation. 000022762 7001_ $$aDahlman, Carl J.,$$d1950- 000022762 7001_ $$aBank, World$$c(Washington, D.C) 000022762 7001_ $$aVishwanath, Tara. 000022762 7001_ $$aKouame, Auguste Tano. 000022762 7102_ $$aWorld Bank. 000022762 7102_ $$a@international Bank For Reconstruction And Development (washington, D.c.) 000022762 7102_ $$aBanca Mondiale,. 000022762 7102_ $$aBanco Internacional De Reconstrucción Y.
