@article{19736, note = {The World Media Handbook has been prepared primarily as a reference tool for the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and other media professionals within the UN-system. The Handbook provides a summary of selected media and related data covering countries around the world. The information contained in this second edition refers to the countries that host, or are serviced by, United Nations Information Centres/Services (UNICS), and field offices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Entries for each country include a set of demographic and communication indicators and a concise list of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals, news agencies, broadcasting organizations, journalistic associations, and communication educational institutions. The indicators were cOMPIled almost exclusively from the latest United Nations statistical yearbooks and specialized publications. The mass media related entries were drawn from various international directories, world encyclopedias and trade journals. This information was verified, during the second half of 1991, by the UNICS and/or UNDP field offices, against local directories, other published sources and direct inquiries to the media organizations and journalism institutions.
