The "public domain" can be defined in legal terms as sources and types of data and information whose uses are not restricted by statutory intellectual property laws or by other legal regimes, and that are accordingly available to the public for use without authorization. In recent years, however, there have been growing legal, economic, and technological pressures that restrict the creation and availability of public-domain information -- scientific and otherwise. It is therefore important to review the role, value, and limits on public-domain STI. The meeting brought together leading experts and managers from the public and private sectors who are involved in the creation, dissemination, and use of STI to discuss (1) the role, value, and limits of making STI available in the public domain for research and education; (2) the various legal, economic, and technological pressures on the producers of public-domain STI and the potential effects of these pressures on research and education; (3) the existing and proposed approaches for preserving the STI in the public domain or for providing "open access" in the United States; and (4) other important issues in this area that may benefit from further analysis. 000013326 650_0 $$aCommunication of technical information$$zUnited States. 000013326 650_0 $$aRight of property$$vCongresses. 000013326 650_0 $$aDatabase management$$vCongresses. 000013326 650_0 $$aIntellectual property$$zUnited States. 000013326 650_0 $$aInformation technology$$vCongresses. 000013326 650_0 $$aResearch$$xInformation services$$vCongresses. 000013326 650_0 $$aCommunication in science$$vCongresses. 000013326 650_4 $$aSCIENTIFIC INFORMATION 000013326 650_4 $$aPUBLIC DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE 000013326 650_4 $$aINTELLECTUAL PROPERTY : SCIENTIFIC PROPERTY : RIGHTS OF SCIENTISTS : SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES 000013326 650_6 $$aTechnologie de l'information$$vCongrès. 000013326 650_6 $$aBases de données$$vCongrès. 000013326 650_6 $$aPropriété intellectuelle$$vCongrès. 000013326 650_6 $$aRecherche$$xServices d'information$$vCongrès. 000013326 650_6 $$aInformation scientifique$$vCongrès. 000013326 650_6 $$aDroit de propriété$$vCongrès. 000013326 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xCommerce$$xLaw and legislation. 000013326 7001_ $$aEsanu, Julie M.,$$eeditor. 000013326 7001_ $$aUhlir, Paul F.,$$eeditor. 000013326 7001_ $$aEbrary, Inc. 000013326 7102_ $$aNational Research Council (u.s.).$$bSteering Committee On The Role Of Scientific And Technical Data And Information In The Public Domain. 000013326 903__ $$v1 000013326 942__ $$cMON 000013326 952__ $$w2006-11-03$$p2004-0082$$r60.00$$u14887$$bMAIN$$10$$kN 64 ESA.R$$v2004-02-26$$zLibrary$$70 000013326 980__ $$aBIB 000013326 999__ $$c14021$$d14021
