Eight German specialists in intellectual public and international property law examine current legal protections and the exploitation of the genetic and traditional resources of indigenous cultures by Western-style industries. After presenting a general framework for indigenous issues in international public law, the text deals with the different areas of concern traditional knowledge, genetic resources, indigenous names and designations, and folklore presenting factual background to the current problems and analysis of the legal situation at the international, regional and national levels. The text concludes with recommendations for areas in which more work needs to be done.
