"The digital technology is creating new usage opportunities of copyright protected material while at the same time it is greatly challenging the existing rights clearance and licensing practices. Focusing these fundamental changes central clearing houses, initiated by the national collecting societies, have been established in the E.U. Member States. The article describes the ongoing processes and especially monitors the E.U. funded VERDI Project which intends to create a European wide multimedia rights clearing network".
